Saunders Finger Lakes Museum awarded $1.8M state grant

The Saunders Finger Lakes Museum in Branchport has received a $1.8 million grant from the New York State Council on the Arts to support ongoing construction of its main exhibition hall.

The award is part of a broader $86 million investment by the state in 134 capital projects, highlighting New York’s commitment to strengthening its arts and cultural infrastructure.

“Our arts and culture sector is a powerhouse, inspiring the world with innovation and creativity,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “By investing in our museums, our theaters and our arts centers, we enrich our communities, strengthen local economies and improve tourism all over the State.”

The Saunders Finger Lakes Museum aims to celebrate the diverse ecology and culture of the Finger Lakes Region. Though still under construction, the museum has already activated its mission through hands-on programming and outdoor features, including wetland trails, a natural playscape, and an accessible kayak and canoe launch.

The state funding will support the continued development of a 15,000-square-foot facility featuring immersive exhibits and interactive experiences. Plans include the Finger Lakes Story Lounge—a community room and space for traveling exhibits—and an education center focused on the region’s historical and cultural stories.

Each area of the museum has been designed for flexibility, accessibility, and future growth, offering experiences for visitors of all ages.
