Scam risks, nutrition, history and more highlight Carson City Senior Center events in June


The Carson City Senior Center is rolling out the final weeks of spring and beginning of summer with multiple events in June, including workshops addressing seniors at risk for scams, estate planning, nutrition, a retirement party for business manager Michael Salogga and more.

Life & Legacy Estate Planning: 4-week workshop offered

Attorney Caren Jenkins of Nevada Legacy Law is offering an estate planning 4-week workshop to take charge of the “third third” of your life, leaving clear instructions for your desired health and medical care at the end of life, and the distribution of your assets through estate planning. There are two workshops offered: Tuesdays, 5:30-7:00pm, June 3, 10, 17, 24 or Wednesdays, 10:30-12pm, June 4, 11, 18, 25. Scams & Seniors – Avoid being taken advantage of!

Better Business Bureau (BBB) is visiting the Carson City Senior Center to talk on scam prevention on Friday, June 6 at 10:00am in the Joshua Tree room (east end) of the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. The impact of scams is significant. Billions of dollars are being lost by people of all ages. Millions are reporting their experience. What can we do to prevent scams? Educate ourselves about them. Nevada Bird Expert hosting speaking event

Did you put out some bird feeders but don’t know what those birds are that are coming to them? Or are you new to this area and not familiar with what birds are here? Or do you just want to improve your bird-identification skills? Join Alan Gubanich, long-time member of the local Lahontan Audubon Society in Reno, as he describes the common birds found in your yards and neighborhoods here in the Carson City area on Friday, June 6 at 12:30pm in the Joshua Tree room (east end) at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. Free Farmer’s Market Coupons for eligible seniors

The Carson City Senior Center will be hosting the distribution of farmer’s market coupons for seniors on June 4, 5, 6, from 10-12pm in the main lobby of the Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. Seniors age 60 or older may be eligible for $50 in coupons to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at the local farmer’s market. Seniors (60+) must be a Nevada resident and have a household income at or below $2,413 (one person) or $3,261 (two people). Limit one booklet per person, while supplies last. A Conversation with Bard McMullen, Folklife Specialist

What does a Folklife Specialist do? Support the various communities and tradition bearers around the Silver State in their work to preserve and promote their cultural practices and artforms. Brad will talk about his job at the Nevada Arts Council and how it relates to one of the major traditional arts events in Nevada, the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering on Tuesday, June 17 at 12:30pm at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, Joshua Tree Room (east end). Free event. The Wedding of the Waters – a History Program

In October of 1937, Catholic Priest Father John Crowley from Lone Pine, carried out one of the grandest events to have taken place in the Eastern Sierra, in a magnificent three-day pageant. Over 50,000 people watched in amazement as a special gourd of water was moved from the highest lake in the United States, to the lowest spot in the western hemisphere. Using extensive research and seldom seen photos, local historians David & Gayle Woodruff take a nostalgic look back at this one of a kind event in a 55 minute slide show on Tuesday, June 10 at 1:30pm at the Carson City Senior Center, Nevada Room (west end), 911 Beverly Drive. Nutrition Walk: The Art of Cooking for One

Join Certified Nutritionist Laura Deverse from Carson Tahoe Health to identify the benefits and challenges when cooking for one, outline tips for success, and discover resources that will continue your ability to cook healthy and wholesome meals. Senior Ride Free – Annual Bus Pass Renewals at the Senior Center

Jump Around Carson (JAC) provides free bus passes for Carson City seniors 60 years of age or older. The annual renewal event is on June 17th and 18th from 10:30-12:30pm at the Carson City Senior Center, main lobby, 911 Beverly Drive.  If you miss this event, you can obtain a bus pass after the 18th at the Senior Center, Monday through Friday, 9am to 2pm at reception. Bring your photo ID to meet age and residency requirements to qualify. For more information call (775) 883-0703.

Michael Salogga is Retiring – Celebrate with Us!

Michael Salogga, our Business Manager, is retiring and we are having a celebration on Friday, June 20 from 11-12:30pm in the Dining Room with a special presentation at 11:45 a.m.
