Christmas was in the air recently at Rise & Shine when local artist Angel Allen conducted a card-making workshop with the scholars. Students in grades 1-8 experimented with watercolor and acrylic paint for artistic collages currently on display at the Transylvania Arts Council.

The scholars were able to bring their spirited interpretations of the holiday season and the beauty of winter in the mountains to life. With Allen’s guidance, they learned about color, symmetry, balance and had a lot of fun in the process.

Allen is a multi-faceted local artist who was instrumental in creating the hellbender sculpture for Davidson River School.

The printed holiday cards can be purchased at Newfound Artisans, 22 W. Jordan St., or at Rise & Shine, 290 Oakdale St. All proceeds will benefit the after-school programs of Rise & Shine.
