“It’s today!”
That is what Tehachapi School Superintendent Stacey Larsen-Everson told local members of the American Association of University Women at their recent meeting. They learned “It’s Today” is the motto for all schools in Tehachapi. That means make every minute count. Focus on the here and now. Use modern equipment and current technology. That is just what Tehachapi Unified School District is doing.
COVID-19 pandemic restrictions caused many students to experience not only a loss of learning, but also a decline in social skills. TUSD is addressing these two problems by helping students feel welcomed and accepted by teachers who encourage them to build relationships and connections with others.
Each school has a full-time social worker as well as an intervention specialist. They help those who struggle with any type of problem, whether it be academic, emotional or physical. Students can find comfort and support when they need it. Larsen-Everson says it takes the right mindset to learn. Students must feel cared for and enjoy being at school. She encourages teachers to talk about good things and share positive thoughts in the classroom.
Several programs have been created to help students. One that is very popular is the camping experience. Third-graders attend a two-day camp at Mountain Park where they learn about nature and interrelationship. Fifth-graders have three days of camp where they practice team-building and learn to respect one another. Their camp is held twice yearly and plans include inviting parents to an open house at the campsite.
School is more than just academics. After school clubs have been formed in which children can learn martial arts, crocheting, arts and crafts or pursue other interests. There is a full-time music teacher on each campus with choirs and instrumental groups. One day each week there is a classroom music lesson.
AAUW members learned much about TUSD philosophy and future plans. The feeling was kids in our town are fortunate to go to school in Tehachapi where the staff and the school board work to help them succeed.
