Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is not only a hit for Netflix — the anime series is also inspiring home interiors. Characterized by bright colours and bold elements, the show draws on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels written and drawn by Bryan Lee O’Malley as well as the 2010 film adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Much to fans’ delight, the main cast from movie reprises their roles in the series. Michael Cera voices the titular character, a Toronto-based bass player who falls for a delivery girl and must fight off her seven evil exes. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans and Brie Larson also return.

The show’s visuals come courtesy of Abel Góngora of the Japanese animation studio Science SARU, which is known for projects such as Devilman Crybaby and Inu-Oh.
“I spent hours virtually visiting houses in Toronto, trying to better understand the way people live, and the way furniture and electrical appliances look,” Góngora revealed in a post on Tudum, the official companion site for Netflix. He also analyzed illustrations for the virtual band Gorillaz, older anime like Dragon Ball and Street Fighter 2D video games.
Bringing the Scott Pilgrim look into your home can be a much easier endeavour. A sense of fun is key, says Better Homes & Gardens. Aim for a high-contrast palette, such as black, white and a vibrant colour — the latter possibly used on the walls for an immersive experience.
“If you can’t paint (or don’t want to), you can also introduce high-contrast elements to the room by choosing curtains or rugs in intense primary colours,” says the publication.
In keeping with the anime aesthetic, choose bold, colourful furniture with clean lines. Mid-century modern pieces can work well. And don’t go overboard on the accessories — they’ll just create visual clutter.

As for wall decorations, consider prints from pop artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. “Select simple, black frames to make the art the focus, and to keep the accents in line with the overall look,” says Better Homes & Gardens.
If you’re looking for a more direct nod to the Scott Pilgrim universe, why not bring a movie poster or fan art into your space? Amazon.ca has several poster sizes, suitable for hanging on the wall or used as an accent piece on a shelf. As always, Etsy has a variety of options. Seller Zazipou offers the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: Retro Edition Print (11 by 17 inches) for $34.94.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was released Nov. 17 on Netflix with eight episodes. Although critics have praised the project, O’Malley and co-creator BenDavid Grabinski told Rolling Stone they’re not planning another season.
“It’s self-contained for now. We loved what we did. We put it all in there. We don’t have any ideas lying on the floor. We pretty much put them all in,” O’Malley said. “I never say never, but right now, it seems like it would take about 50 different miracles simultaneously for another season to happen.”
