
WASHINGTON, D.C.- Southern Connecticut women’s basketball fell to the University of the District of Columbia, 69-58, on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 2-3 and an NE10 record of 1-1, while the Firebirds improved to an overall record of 6-0.
Southern started the game with a 6-0 run. In addition, they outscored UDC in the first quarter, 17-11 and shot a game-best of four-for-four from the free-throw line. In the second quarter, the Owls continued to extend their lead but towards the end of the quarter, the Firebirds worked to cut the lead to one heading into the second half. In the third quarter, UDC took the lead for the first time as Southern fought hard to stay in the game. The Owls were down by three heading into the final quarter and knew that it would be a battle until the end.
It was back-and-forth between the two teams in the fourth quarter. Southern tied the score at 57-57 with Julianna Bonilla’s three-pointer, with less than five minutes to go. Despite the strong second-half effort by the Owls, the Firebirds pulled away and got the victory of 69-58.
Renza Milner had a career-best and team-best of 14 points, led the team with nine rebounds and shot five-for-six in field goals. Katie Williamson recorded 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished two assists and was four-for-four from the free-throw line for the Owls. Julianna Bonilla had 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and shot two-for-two from the free-throw line.
Makenzie Helms scored seven points, had a team-best of five assists and shot five-for-five from the free throw line. Jillian Martin and Hope Fox both scored five points. Martin also had a team-best of three steals and three assists. As Fox had six rebounds, an assist and a block against the Firebirds.
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mass. against NE10 opponent, American International College. Southern returns to the James Moore Field House on Saturday, Dec. 2 against The College of Saint Rose at 1:30 p.m. in an NE10 matchup.
