Linnentown Lane is welcoming a sculpture in the coming months.
The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government has created an opportunity for artists to submit applications to be considered for public art in Linnentown Lane. The goal of this artwork will be to capture the joy and sense of life in Linnentown, while also speaking to the hardships the people of this town had once faced through their displacement and the legacy their descendants have inherited, according to the ACCGov website.
Linnentown, a historically Black neighborhood near the University of Georgia, was demolished due to an urban renewal project in the 1960s, displacing approximately 50 families to build dormitories for the university.
The art will be selected by a panel of community members, including the Linnentown descendants and members of the Athens Justice & Memory Project, according to ACC Public Art Coordinator Tatiana Veneruso.
The application deadline is Friday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m.
Correction: A previous version of this story did not report that a sculpture was coming to Linnentown Lane. A previous version of this story also did not report that art will be selected by a panel of community members. The Red & Black regrets this error, and it has since been corrected.
