Downtown Seattle has just gotten a colorful makeover thanks to a collaborative effort to revitalize the city’s core with art. The Hope Corps Downtown Seattle Mural Project, an initiative supported by Seattle’s Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) and fueled by a $700,000 budget in 2023, has brought over 30 new murals to life, stretching from SODO to Belltown.
According to Art Beat Seattle, the project was a joint effort amongst several community organizations, including Belltown United, the Downtown Seattle Association (DSA), Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDpda), SODO Business Improvement Area (SODO BIA), Visit Seattle, and the Wing Luke Memorial Foundation which joined forces to commission local artists to create a tapestry of public artworks, each weaving its own unique story into the fabric of the city. Still, they intensify the pedestrian experience by offering a gallery-like atmosphere beneath the open sky.
Art enthusiasts and casual observers can now stroll downtown Seattle’s streets and witness a renaissance of urban artistry. With over 30 murals adding splashes of color and creativity to the walls of buildings, the project symbolizes hope and perhaps writing a form of love letter to the city through visual expression. Art Beat Seattle provides a complete list of artists and their respective murals for those interested in a self-guided tour or just eager to glimpse the new additions.
