Segun Owowa: Boosting Innovation In The Automotive Technology Industry

Oluwasegun Alex Owowa is an innovator in Telematics, a fusion of telecommunications and informatics for transmitting, receiving and storing information related to remote objects or vehicles such as cars, trucks or containers.

Owowa, a 15-year tech expert, explained that the innovation in the telematics sector of the auto tech product was driven by the need to improve connectivity, efficiency, and data analysis in different industries.

According to Owowa, telematics aims to integrate telecommunications and monitoring systems to track and manage assets, such as vehicles, humans, pets, and machinery, thereby enhancing safety, performance, and real-time decision-making.

The innovator highlights the transformative impact of telematics on key issues in Nigeria ranging from traffic management and vehicle theft prevention to fleet management, safety, and emergency response. Telematics can also facilitate data-driven policy making, providing policymakers with crucial insights to improve transportation policies and urban planning. Ultimately, the integration of telematics can foster more efficient, safer, and well-managed transportation systems across Nigeria.

Segun Owowa who x-rayed the challenges stated that indeed there are challenges just as they are solvable. He noted that the challenges inherent in forging telematics include; data integration, data security and privacy, scalability, real-time processing, interoperability and cost.

He said, “Ensuring that sensitive data is securely transmitted and stored while complying with privacy regulations is a critical challenge which will involve us utilize secure servers to backup our data. Interoperability involves ensuring compatibility between different telematics systems and standards and can be challenging particularly with a diverse range of hardware and software.

“For example using a fuel sensor from a different supplier and a GPS tracker for a client can be cumbersome. But as expert we scout out the best providers to meet the needs of our customers. Addressing these challenges often requires advancements in technology, rigorous testing, and continuous improvement of processes,” he submitted.

The innovator stated that, his firm, WethinkTech Global Limited, currently has thirty early adopters who have subscribed into its products and services. “Most of my clients are innovation enthusiasts and I have come a long way with them as they value how telematics helps to tackle logistics and transportation issues among others.

“The product is of good worth suitable for each user. Currently, we are offering three different products: GPS Traking Wearable Smartwatch with an app. The second product is the Dashcam is relatively dependent on how many accessories and device customers want to order,” he said.

Owowa commented on the current state of technology and auto industries in Nigeria, noting that they are going through major changes because of technological advances and growing consumer need for intelligent solutions. He explained that the use of GPS trackers and GPS smart watches will have a significant effect on fleet management efficiency and real-time tracking, enabling businesses with vehicle fleets to track their assets in real-time, improve route optimisation, decrease fuel consumption, and boost overall operational efficiency.

Impact of GPS Smartwatches is of great benefits which include personal Safety and health monitoring, emergency alerts and health tracking which leverages on features like heart rate monitoring, activity tracking, and fitness goals can contribute to better health management and lifestyle improvements,” he stressed.

According to him, the economic impact of telematics and trackers contribute to economic growth, create job opportunities, and support the development of new business models. “Overall, GPS trackers and GPS smartwatches can significantly enhance operational efficiency, personal safety, and connectivity in Nigeria, driving positive changes across the tech and auto sectors,” says Owowa.

As a tech entrepreneur, he noted that, needs of customers is key and his firm is simultaneously conducting surveys and focus groups to understand customer needs, pain points, and preferences from our early adopters

Owowa’s expertise has been established with top-tier multinationals and startups such as Nakachi Consulting, MTN, Kasookoo, Ruptela among others. He is the Chief Executive Officer of WethinkTech Global Limited.
