Shelton vs Sinner Prediction (R1): 2023 ATP Vienna Tennis

Ben Shelton will face Jannik Sinner at the 2023 ATP Vienna tennis event this week. This is a pretty good match on paper as both players have recent titles on tour. Sinner won in Beijing not long who while Shelton just took down the ATP Tokyo crown. This finals-quality match will be a first-round contest in the tournament, one that is also known as the 2023 Erst Bank Open. My Shelton vs Sinner prediction is that the latter will win this match ahead of a solid run in the tournament.

Recent Match Results for Ben Shelton

Shelton claimed the first title of his career just days ago. He won the Tokyo event through Aslan Karatsev and Marcos Giron in the late rounds. Shelton also enjoyed a strong tournament in Shanghai earlier this month. He actually defeated Jannik Sinner in that tournament, which was the last time we saw Sinner in action.

However, the result of that match from the 2023 Shanghai Masters need not be considered too relevant. Sinner had won the Beijing title just prior to Shanghai and had to be tired when he faced Shelton. Now, the shoe is on the other foot as Shelton enters Vienna on no rest. It would be very impressive if Shelton, who was playing tough tennis all last week, could beat the better-rested Sinner in Vienna’s first round. Here’s a look at the American’s recent events.

ATP Tokyo: Defeated Aslan Karatsev for the 500-series title
Shanghai Masters quarterfinal: Loss to Sebastian Korda
US Open semifinals: Loss to Novak Djokovic
Cincinnati Masters R32: Loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas
Canadian Masters R32: Loss to Carlos Alcaraz
ATP Washington R32: Loss to Juncheng Shang

Shelton vs Sinner Prediction: Sinner wins

Sinner at -400 for a moneyline bet is the way to go in this match (bet365) for mulitple reason. The first is the relative fatigue issue that I already reviewed. But secondly, this is Sinner we are talking about here. The World No. 4 entering a draw on good rest cannot be ignored as a title threat in basically any tournament. My recommendation is to take Sinner at -400 to win straight up with the expectation that Shelton will be just a little below par.
