Shira Evans ‘06 Joins Ithaca Athletics as Sports Nutrition Consultant

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is excited to announce the addition of Shira Evans ’06 as a sports nutrition consultant as part of the sports performance team. Shira Evans, MS, RD, CSSD, LD is an expert in the fields of sports nutrition, RED-S, disordered eating, and eating disorder care.

“I want to thank Susan Bassett and the athletic department for offering me this opportunity,” Evans said. “It means a lot to me to be able to return as an alum. I am very excited to provide sports nutrition services to all of the current student-athletes and teams, to help foster their holistic development and to help cultivate positive, lifelong relationships with food and movement.”

She is the owner of Shira Evans Nutrition LLC and excited to offer virtual nutrition services to sport teams and 1:1 counseling service to athletes for sports nutrition, and the treatment of RED-S and disordered eating/eating disorders.

“The IC Athletics Peak Performance Strategy is a comprehensive program providing IC student-athletes with the information and resources they need to compete at high level academically, athletically, and socially,” said Susan Bassett ’79, Associate Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “We are committed to constantly improving resources and updating our programs. Nutrition is a key ingredient to success in all aspects of our student-athlete’s performance, we are thrilled to add Shira to our team.”

Shira started her career working in higher levels of care for eating disorders, supporting clients of all diverse backgrounds, and working in a multidisciplinary fashion. Simultaneously, she ventured into private practice to support athletes, providing 1:1 nutrition counseling to optimize their performance.

“We are excited to have a resource and support person that has the amazing credentials/experience that Shira has,” said women’s track & field head coach Jennifer Potter ’92. “Her experiences as a student-athlete at Ithaca College and within our xc/track and field programs will only elevate her connection with our current student-athletes.”

She has many years of experience working as a sports dietitian in Division-I athletics, most recently serving as the Director of Sports Nutrition at UNC Chapel Hill and prior to that working as the Director of Performance Nutrition at Dartmouth College.

“Having someone with Shira’s experience and expertise join our department will pay huge dividends,” stated head men’s basketball coach Waleed Farid. “Nutrition is an important, yet often overlooked component when thinking about sports performance, and having a resource like this available to our student-athletes will allow our programs to continue to compete for championships at the highest level.  Not to mention, with Shira being a former Bomber, there’s a built-in connection with our student-athletes and our department that I think will be a strong foundation for a very successful relationship.”

Evans is a proud Ithaca College alumna. While at Ithaca, she competed in cross country and track and field. She earned a bachelor’s in biology and minor in nutrition science. She earned an MS/RD from Framingham State University.

She continues to run in marathons, and she enjoys cycling. Evans has cycled across the United States twice, to support affordable housing initiatives.
