LUBBOCK, Texas – The Wichita State men’s tennis team fell short on the road against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday afternoon.
“It was a tough match on the road today,” said Head Coach Darragh Glavin. “Our guys fought hard and had lots of chances. We were pretty close to coming away with a win.”
The 2-5 loss for the Shockers (1-3) makes them 1-2 on the road this season and are now 0-10 all-time against Texas Tech (1-0). Junior Kristof Minarik returned to the lineup for the first time this season and collected a point for the Shockers in his debut at court three. Freshman Vanja Hodzic added the additional Shocker point with a win at court four.
The match began with a hotly contested doubles point. After Hodzic and Misha Kvantaliani were defeated 1-6 at court one, Richey King and Marcelo Sepulveda were narrowly defeated at court two, 4-6. Alejandro Jacome and Minarik’s matchup at court three ended unfinished with the Shocker duo holding a 5-4 advantage.
Minarik took the first singles point of the day with a sweeping victory at court three, 6-3, 6-1.
Kvantaliani fell at court two shortly after in a close match to #114 Reed Collier, 4-6, 6-7 (4).
Later on, Jacome fell to 71st ranked Ollie Wallin at court one in a highly competitive three-set match, giving the Red Raiders a 3-1 advantage.
Near simultaneously, Hodzic earned victory at court four, rallying back to win a three-set battle and make it 3-2 Red Raiders.
Texas Tech’s Piotr Pawlak would win the match for the Red Raiders with a close victory over Luke Bracks at court six. Sepulveda would also fall at #5 singles to conclude the match, 5-2 in favor of Texas Tech.
The Shockers next match will be their first within friendly confines this season, as they will host Omaha at the Genesis Health Club on Rock Road in Wichita on January 26 at 1:00PM.
