Shooting results in chase through downtown Columbia, police say

Police say they are investigating a shooting at 180 Greystone Boulevard, which left a male victim with life-threatening injuries.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — An employee of a car dealership has been seriously injured after a shooting in Columbia on Monday afternoon, according to Columbia Police.

Police say the shooting happened at 180 Greystone Boulevard, which is one of the car dealerships along that stretch of road. When police arrived they found a male victim with life-threatening injuries.

The male suspect drove away from the scene, taking officers on a police pursuit through downtown Columbia, according to police.  Police say they followed the suspect in his getaway vehicle to 2200 block of Shady Lane, where the suspect crashed in the backyard of a home. The suspect was captured on scene.

The suspect is accused of hitting multiple vehicles during his attempted getaway, according to police.

While the victim was an employee of the car dealership, the suspect was not, so police aren’t sure if there’s a connection between the two men.

“We don’t know if this was a random act of violence or not,” Columbia Police Deputy Chief Melron Kelly said.

Columbia police also said an officer was injured while responding to the incident, when the officer’s vehicle collided with other cars at the intersection of North Main Street and Prescott. The officer suffered a leg injury and several other people involved were taken to the hospital.

The S.C. Highway Patrol will investigate the crash.  Columbia police say multiple charges are pending.
