PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Several campsite openings in Oregon’s Deschutes National Forest have been delayed ahead of Memorial Day weekend after lingering snowpack stalled preseason maintenance and hazard tree removal, the United States Forest Service announced Tuesday.
The campgrounds with delayed openings include Elk Lake Campground, Little Fawn Campground, Mallard Marsh Campground, Point Campground, Quinn Meadow Horse Camp, Soda Creek Campground, and South Campground in the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District along with Trapper Creek Campground in the Crescent Ranger District.
Visitors with reservations at those campsites through May 30 will get a refund and cancellation email as soon as Tuesday, May 21, the Forest Service said.
The status of campground openings can be checked through the Forest Service website.
Vista Recreation, the campground concessionaire, and the Forest Service are monitoring the snow levels and will begin preseason maintenance “as soon as snow recedes,” to open the campgrounds, officials said.
