Singer Sinead O’Connor Passes Away at Age 56

Sinead O’Connor, an Irish singer who achieved worldwide success with her song “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 56, according to the Irish Times and RTE, a national broadcaster in Ireland.

O’Connor rose to prominence in the international music industry with her hypnotic cover of a song that Prince originally wrote. In the music video for the song, O’Connor faces the camera head-on, and it has had approximately 400 million views on YouTube since it was uploaded.

Long renowned as much for her shaved head and outspoken opinions on religion, sex, feminism, and war as much as for her music, she will be remembered in certain places for ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a television performance on “Saturday Night Live.” She did this during the show’s first season.
