NEW ORLEANS – Old Dominion women’s tennis junior Sofia Johnson was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Johnson was 2-1 on the week for the Monarchs as they took second in the Iowa State Regional of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Tournament. On Saturday, in a 4-0 ODU win over the host Cyclones, Johnson and teammate Lidiia Rasskouskaia recorded a 7-6 (7-4) victory over the 56th-ranked duo of Anna Kuearum and Isabella Dunlap for the victory. In singles, she put the Monarchs up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kuearum at No. 1.
On Sunday, she and Rasskouskaia fell to third-ranked Oklahoma State at No. 1 doubles.
This spring Johnson is 2-0 in singles at No. 1 and 2-1 in doubles with Rasskouskaia also at No. 1.
ODU will play its first home matches of 2024 this weekend as they host Wake Forest at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Penn State at 1 p.m. on Sunday inside the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. Sunday will be Darryl Cummings Day as the late coach will be honored in a pre-match ceremony.
