Some TikTok trends do more harm than good – stay away from ‘micro’ ingredients


A SKINCARE expert has warned against using DIY treatments seen on social media as they can cause lasting damage.

She shared alternative beauty tips proven to keep skin healthy and radiant.

Dr. Olha Vorodyukhina (@dr_olha) is an aesthetics trainer and the founder of Angels Twelve Clinic, a clinic specializing in facial aesthetics, beauty, and hairdressing services in the UK.

The mom of three boasts almost 50,000 followers on Instagram, where she shares her expert skincare advice.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she revealed the risks associated with trendy at-home hacks and shared what to do instead.

Vorodyukhina said social media is full of beauty tricks that can “cause more harm than good.”

She shared how blindly following tutorials on apps such as TikTok could damage the skin.

“In the case of face taping for example, if you leave tape on your skin for a length of time you can damage the skin barrier and end up with red, inflamed, spotty skin,” she said.

“Also avoid aggressive and abrasive products for skin exfoliation. 

“Scrubs and masks that have microparticles are not suitable for all skin types and if you use them regularly you can damage the skin’s protective barrier.”

SIMPLE SKINCARE

Vorodyukhina recommended having a minimal skincare routine as it can be more consistently maintained than a complex one.

“I advise my patients to keep it simple: cleanser, serum, hydrate with moisturizer, and protect with SPF,” she said.

“I recommend Heliocare which offers high-level broad-spectrum protection against UVA, UVB, and infrared-A.  

“Do this first thing in the morning as well as at bedtime.”

She said retinol is the most effective ingredient in skincare for targeting fine lines and wrinkles.

“Medical grade skincare containing retinol, retinoids, or retinoid acid such as Environ is the gold standard, applying last in your skincare routine at night,” she said.

“Avoid using retinol and vitamin C at the same time, as it can irritate your skin.”

BEAUTY BASICS

Vorodyukhina said healthy skin “starts from within” therefore it’s important to eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated.

She advised cutting down on sugars, processed foods, and dairy products.

“If you’re serious about looking well and feeling good then lifestyle changes may be just as important as skincare products and treatments,” she said.

“I’m a great advocate of prevention and believe that a healthy lifestyle including specific oral supplements for your individual needs is vital.

She said that regular exercise and spending time outside can also be beneficial for skin health.

“Walking, moderate cardio as well as working on strength at least 2-3 times per week,” she said.

“Find 15-20 minutes per day for yourself and do things that you love and enjoy, this will boost your endorphins and help you stay positive and younger.”

“Make sure you have 7-8 hours of sleep,” she added.

“To optimize the quality try to go to bed no later than 10 pm and have an hour to relax before bed, such as reading, meditating, or taking a nice bath.”
