Sparking creativity: Fountain Hills continues Utility Box Mural Program

The town of Fountain Hills is making waves in the Valley arts community with the expansion of its successful Utility Box Mural Program, further solidifying its commitment to enhancing the local arts scene.

In partnership with the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA), six new vibrant murals will be unveiled throughout downtown Fountain Hills this fall, transforming utility boxes along the Avenue of the Fountains and Palisades into captivating works of art.

Now in its second year, this downtown placemaking initiative celebrates the unique cultural and natural heritage of Fountain Hills, with themes such as the town’s iconic fountain, dark skies, native animals, and the scenic landscapes that make the town a nationally recognized destination. Selected artists Laura Thurbon, Ignacio Garcia and Jesse Perry bring their distinct styles to the project, adding a new layer of beauty and storytelling to public spaces.

“Public art has the power to both shape a community and reflect its identity,” said Kate Marquez, executive director of SAACA. “By integrating these murals into the streetscape, we are not only enhancing the visual landscape of Fountain Hills but also promoting a sense of place and community pride. The town of Fountain Hills is demonstrating a growing commitment to both placemaking and placekeeping through its support of arts and culture. This program is more than just beautification – it is about connecting residents and visitors to the rich cultural fabric that defines the community.”

The Utility Box Mural Program has become one of the most popular public art initiatives in the area, bringing together artists and the community to celebrate local creativity. The series is part of an ongoing effort to create a more vibrant and culturally connected downtown, offering residents and visitors a chance to explore the community through art.
