Trailing by 9 points, with just 5:23 left in their season, the Martins Mill Lady Mustangs displayed the heart of a champion.
McKenna Wise sent a signal that the Lady Mustangs still had a heartbeat, by nailing a three-point shot with 4:12 left. Just over a minute later, three free throws by Kara Nixon made it a one possession game.
Nocona added a free throw to lead, 40-36, with 2:13 left. Kara Nixon put the pressure on the Indians with a three point shot with 1:40 left.
After Nocona hit one of a pair of free throws, Nixon buried another three, giving the Mustangs their first lead since the final second of the second quarter.
The game hung in the balance when Nixon fouled Nocona star Megyn Meekins, sending her to the line with eight seconds to go.
She made one of her opportunities to tie the game at 42-42. Nixon, as she has done at other times this season, performed best with the game on the line. She drove the lane and laid the ball in the bucket as the buzzer blew at the Alamodome. The comeback and mission for the season for the Lady Mustangs was accomplished.
Nixon led the Mill with 16 points, Alli Vaughan had 12 and McKenna Wise 11. Meekins was the leading Nocona scorer, with 16.
Martins Mill completes the season with a 36-5 mark. Nocona, which defeated last year’s champion, Lipan in the regional finals, went 35-4.
