Chandigarh: DAV College’s Eco Club and NSS unit, in collaboration with the UT department of environment and Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, hosted “ECOFEST 2023” on the college premises.
An exhibition was also organised in which several NGOs and individuals put up a display of eco-friendly products and practices on the campus.
There were at least 31 stalls, of which the one with millet products drew most of the crowd.
Khushi Saini, a volunteer working towards millets promotion for “Kheti Virasat Mission”, a social organisation based in Faridkot, said, “We are helping farmers bring their products to the market. The government has recognised 2023 as the international year of millets. That is why we are trying to attract the youth by selling products like noodles, pasta, biscuits, and chocolates made of millets.”
The event featured several activities aimed at promoting, showcasing, and honouring various initiatives in environmental conservation.
The chief guest of the festival, T C Nautiyal, director of the UT department of environment, and member secretary of CPCC, highlighted the pivotal role of youth in safeguarding the environment. Dr Samrat Ghosh from IISER, Mohali, delivered a talk on green crackers and demonstrated live, innovative and smoke-free fireworks.
Assistant environment engineer Meenakshi Jatayan delivered a talk on plastic and e-waste management, whereas Rhythm Aggarwal disseminated information on single-use plastics.
Joint secretary of the social welfare department, Neeraj, also attended the event.

The agriculture department of Odisha will host the International Convention on Millets, making it the first state to organize such an event. The convention will focus on showcasing the tribal heritage of millets and the success stories of millet entrepreneurship. It will include various activities such as farmer engagement, technical sessions, policy roundtables, B2B meetings, and an international food festival. The convention will also release a Foundation Guide on millets developed in collaboration with international experts. The state government has allocated a budget of Rs 2687 crore for the promotion of millets over four years.

Three eco-friendly polling stations have been set up in Kanker district of Bastar division for the upcoming assembly elections in India. These stations are decorated with bamboo and leaves, with no usage of plastic. The district administration aims to raise awareness about clean and green environment and promote sustainable practices. The stations have locally available vegetation and earthen utensils for drinking water. The initiative aims to attract voters and remind them to adopt eco-friendly practices.
