Student art, landscape art, mixed-media and textile art are all part of the Red Deer’s First Friday gallery showings for April 5.
For the Sake of Argument, an exhibit by visual arts students at Red Deer Polytechnic will be on until April 20 at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery. This show aims to prompt viewers “to contemplate the myriad possibilities that artists weigh before reaching their final destination.” There will be an April 5 First Friday opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m.
First Light, mixed-media works depicting fire by Jeff Powers, Peter Allan, Emily Allison, and Russell Davidson, will be showing at Artribute Art School in the Old Courthouse on Ross Street for First Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
LEAP! the 2014 Red Deer Arts Council visual arts members’ juried exhibit will continue until April 21 at the Kiwanis Gallery, downstairs at the Red Deer Public Library. Artists were encouraged to leap into the unknown. A First Friday reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Artist Kelly Christenson is exploring abstraction in his Journey to Expressionism show at the Red Deer Arts Council’s Community Gallery until April 17. The First Friday reception will be from 5-7 p.m.
The 11-artist Craft and Care textile and fibre arts show will continue to April 26 at the Viewpoint Gallery in the Red Deer Culture Centre. A First Friday reception will be held from 6-8 p.m.
Flower You Today? is a show of spring-like art from many local artists. It will run from April 4 to May 29 at Curiosity Art and Framing, 5002-48th St. The gallery will be open to 7 p.m. on First Friday.
Charitable art created by Grade 4 students at St. Martin de Porres School will continue to be shown at The Velvet Olive Lounge. Proceeds from all art sold in the show Nature’s Layers of Complexity will be donated to a non-profit of the artists’ choice. There will be a First Friday reception from 5-7 p.m.

– Mixed-media landscape paintings by Olivia Motley can be viewed in the Corridor Community Gallery, downstairs at the Red Deer Recreation Centre to May 31. The artist says, “I have grown to find beauty in the most complex scenes, as well as seemingly barren landscapes. It is my hope that the love I have for the beauty of our Earth can be conveyed to you through my work.”
– Shadows/footprints, art and photography by andrea dillingham-lacoursiere and Travis Boschman, is showing until April 19 at the Marjorie Wood Gallery in the Kerry Wood Nature Centre.
– Spring Parade of Renewal, works by Audrey Rots, Pat Yates, Sandra Weiss and Wendy Meers, can be seen in the hallway of the Northside Community Centre YMCA until April 30. The facility is open to 9 p.m. on Friday Friday.
– Works by artists Greg Swainson, Andrea Swainson and Julia Zaouzolkova is showing at Solorzano Spa Cafe & Wine Bar, 4631 50 Street. The spa will be open from 7–9 p.m. on Friday Friday.
