SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Brand new cameras could be coming to Park Central Square along with major technology upgrades for Springfield Police and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
The money would be coming from the Department of Justice JAG grant if the city council approves it at its meeting on Nov. 6.
”We share that with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. We have a cost-sharing agreement with them,” said Major Tad Peters with the Springfield Police. “We keep 60%, and they get 40%. It’s really just upgrading some equipment with some more modern stuff and replacing those that are no longer working.”
The upgrades include replacing 13 cameras on Park Central Square and nearby parking garages. The grant money would also replace computers in police patrol cars and add a Cyber Crime Investigations vehicle.
”The vehicle will have workspace inside camera tops, chairs, and some of the equipment they would need to start processing that evidence right there at the scene,” said Peters.
Detectives would then have the power to remotely track cyber crimes like cases of forgery and even for evidence in child pornography investigations.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office would use its share to buy 12 new license plate readers for patrol vehicles.
