St. Francis girls basketball tops PV, remains unbeaten in Cypress Division


Senior Aaliysah Gomez scored a game-high 17 points, and St. Francis High’s girls basketball team topped visiting Pajaro Valley 49-23 to remain unbeaten in Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division play Monday.

The Grizzlies trailed 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, but the Sharks pulled away.

Freshman Maya Calfee scored 15 points for the Sharks (16-2, 9-0). Nevaeh Litel scored seven points, and Emily Raich chipped in with six points.

Giselle Quintero scored 10 points for the Grizzlies (4-15, 3-6), and Zulema Ortiz chipped in with five points.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., St. Francis plays at King City (6-13, 4-5), and Pajaro Valley hosts North Monterey County (12-5, 7-2).

Salinas 48, at Watsonville 43: The Wildcatz trailed 9-0 early and were unable to make up the difference in their PCAL Gabilan Division loss Monday.

Fernanda Lazo scored 15 points to lead Watsonville. Isabella Love scored 12 points, and Iliana Garcia added six points.

Andrea Nava made two 3-pointers and finished with eight points to lead the division leading Cowboys (15-4, 9-0).

Watsonville hosts Monterey (7-11, 4-5) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Boys basketball

Monte Vista Christian 68, King City 34: Bryce Brogan scored a team-high 19 points, and MVC remained in first place in the PCAL Cypress Division with its win Monday.

MVC (15-4, 8-1) is tied with Rancho San Juan (11-7, 8-1) for the division lead. Both teams have five games remaining in the regular season.

MVC jumped out to a 19-4 lead and never looked back.

Jack Ryan and Matteo Vidal each scored 11 points for MVC.

Johell Corrillo led King City (3-14, 1-8) with 23 points.

MVC plays at Gonzales (7-11, 5-4) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Girls soccer

At Harbor 2, Scotts Valley 1: Olivia Chen was awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute and converted for the decisive goal in the Pirates’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League win Monday.

Ava Bibighaus finished off a pass from Eva Luksich in the 11th minute to give Harbor a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons, who missed a penalty kick in the first half, knotted the score at 1-all in the 20th minute.

Goalie Amelia Schelhorse made a half dozen saves for the Pirates.

On Thursday, Harbor (8-4-1, 2-3-1) plays at San Lorenzo Valley (5-7-1, 0-6-0) at 3:30 p.m. and Scotts Valley (7-6-1, 4-3-0) faces Santa Cruz (4-5-2, 1-3-1).

Boys soccer

At Stevenson 7, MVC 0: The Mustangs put three shots on goal in their PCAL Cypress Division loss Monday.

Spencer Stornetta scored four goals for the division leading Pirates (9-3-4, 6-0-2). Charles Elmore scored twice, and Nico Arias Jimenez had a goal and an assist.

MVC (3-11-3, 1-6-1) hosts North Monterey County on Friday at 5:45 p.m.
