WILMINGTON — TMHS junior Riley Stevenson was recognized recently as a winner in the Sixth District Congressional Art Show, hosted by Montserrat College of Art and the office of Congressman Seth Moulton.
Stevenson was one of nearly 100 students from 22 schools across the district to participate in the exhibition, held at the college in Beverly. The juried competition celebrated 31 years this spring. Stevenson’s work, Celtic, won in the Best of School Awards category.
Supported by the TMHS Fine & Performing Arts Department’s David Moffatt, Nicole LaPierre, and Ashley Sullivan, Stevenson’s work was submitted along with TMHS senior Kaylin Mantel, senior Colby Mengata, sophomore Adrian Baez, junior Cassie Berry, and junior Joanna Green.
Stevenson, who enjoys working in a variety of mediums, said, “It was a huge honor to receive this award, especially considering all the amazing pieces that were submitted alongside mine. I’m grateful to my art teachers for submitting my work and believing in me.”
Actively looking at art schools for college, Stevenson advised, “I would encourage students pursuing art to stay passionate about their work and not be afraid to challenge themselves.”
Stevenson particularly enjoys drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture, and photography, and is also on the varsity girls basketball team.
The Congressional Art Competition, initiated by Congress in 1982, is a nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent across the nation and locally in the 6th District of Massachusetts. The competition is open to students in grades 10-12, and winners receive partial scholarships in varying amounts to Montserrat’s Pre-College Summer Program.
