‘Stolen’ dog food hidden in oven sparks fire on Thanksgiving

GREENFIELD — Curiously placed pieces of dog food kibble caused an oven fire on Thanksgiving at an Oakland Street home, the Greenfield Fire Department said.

Mice had been stealing a large amount of dog food, and then hiding it in the residents’ oven, according to a post from the department’s Facebook page.

At about 10:45 a.m., the residents began to preheat their oven, but they were met with flames and smoke. They immediately shut the oven off and called the Fire Department.

The department took the oven apart and extinguished the flaming dog food.

“Not a bad idea to check your oven after long periods of inactivity,” the department said in the post.

The residents’ meal was unaffected, and they were able to cook it at a neighbor’s house, the department said.
