SAN ANTONIO (November 1, 2024) – After receiving more than 40 submissions citywide, the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission (MLK Commission) has announced that 12-year-old Ashlynn Sokolowski, a Robert G. Cole Middle School student, is the winner of the commission’s 10th annual MLK Student Art Contest. Ashlynn’s entry will be used as the visual representation for the 38th Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Commemoration, and she will be honored at the upcoming March and Commemoration news conference in January of 2025.
“Being recognized as the winner of the City of San Antonio’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 10th Annual Student Art Contest is such an honor,” said contest winner Ashlynn Sokolowski. “I was inspired to create artwork that represents the diversity and equality of San Antonio. As a member of a military family, I see how people with many different backgrounds, beliefs and cultures can all come together to serve with one purpose. The city of San Antonio truly represents the community Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. hoped we could share one day. Together WE are more. Together WE are San Antonio.”
The artwork was selected by a panel based on the 2025 theme: “We are the Dream… It takes All of Us” and the artwork’s concept, artistic imagery, visual presentation, and originality.
“Every year we have a unique opportunity to celebrate the talent that exists in students across the county,” said District 2 Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez. “Art offers each of us the ability to communicate meaningfully in ways words don’t always allow, and this year’s submissions evoke feelings of togetherness, community, and love. I’m so proud to honor Ashlynn, the winner of our 10th annual art contest, for the message she chose to share as part of the largest MLK March in the nation. Congratulations, Ashlynn, as well as all who created art in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s honor and memory!”
The City, in partnership with District 2 Councilmember McKee-Rodriguez and the San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission chaired by Dwayne Robinson, invites the community to participate in the largest march in the nation. The 38th Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Commemoration will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy, followed by events at Pittman-Sullivan Park. The event will include a main stage with multicultural performances, a health and wellness area, youth area, food, vendors, and information booths.
