Students’ talents take center stage as FHU’s ‘Makin’ Music’ returns

HENDERSON, Tenn. — One local university hosted their annual show for West Tennessee students.

It is Makin’ Music week at Freed-Hardeman University, and every year on Thursday morning, students from all over West Tennessee come to the auditorium to cheer as loud as they can while the FHU students put on their show.

It is always one of the best events of the entire week. Student coordinator Ellie Rhodes tells us a little bit about why it’s so fun.

“We have kids from Jackson-Madison, from Chester, from McNairy, and we even have some senior centers here. So they’re ready to party,” Rhodes said. “This is normally the best show to kick off the whole weekend. It kind of lets the clubs have that last practice but still have an active crowd. The kids always love it.”

This is a completely student-run event that basically goes all year long. The students start in the summer working as hard as they can to come up with this show.

One of the hosts this year, Blake Westmoreland, tells us a little bit about that work that gets put in, and how much fun it is.

“It was a very vulnerable experience and just a great start to this,” Westmoreland said. “From then on, I think every practice, every rehearsal, we’ve just gotten closer and closer.”

Beginning last year, there is now a Kids Choice Award. Students build this trophy from scratch and it looks amazing. All of the students will vote on their favorite show.

Student coordinator Addie Everson tells us a little bit more about the award.

“I think a lot of the clubs actually think this is the most coveted trophy of the weekend,” Everson said. “Because it’s the most genuine and most sentimental, because the kids get to vote on it and they just get to pick the one they think had the most fun on stage.”

The show will continue throughout the weekend with one show Friday night at 7:30, a Saturday matinee show at 2:00 p.m., and a Saturday night show at 7:30.

This is the 47th year of Freed-Hardeman’s Makin’ Music show.
