How did Cincinnati become Porkopolis? The not-so-pretty tale
Cincinnati has long been called the Queen City. For a time, though, it was known by a less flattering nickname – Porkopolis.
Coney Island closed for good Dec. 31, 2023, but an annual art fair will once again call the land home this summer.
Summerfair Cincinnati, which enters its 58th year, is returning to what was formerly the amusement park, at 6201 Kellogg Ave., May 30 through June 1.
The fine art fair will feature work from more than 340 juried artists across a dozen categories, including photography, painting, wood, metal, sculpture, jewelry and more. This year marks the 40th consecutive year the event has been hosted at the Coney Island space.
Music and Event Management Inc. (MEMI) and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra bought Coney Island’s land in 2023, as they plan to construct a $118 million music campus on the site. Officials say the new venue, dubbed “Riverbend 2.0,” will accommodate large-scale shows and attract a wider array of sought-after artists.
In addition to showcasing work from independent artists, Summerfair raises money for student and professional artists and arts organizations throughout the region and attracts over 20,000 visitors each year. The three-day event also features a slate of regional performers and its Gourmet Arts area with food and drink options.
