The drama that was building on E Level of Jadwin vanished in a matter of minutes, courtesy of Princeton’s Maia Sung and Leena Bennetto.
Princeton had won the doubles point and one singles match and needed two more wins to take the match. Rutgers, though, had already won a singles match and two others were starting the third set.
For a few minutes, it looked like it was anybody’s match. And then in a flash, Princeton had it all wrapped up.
First Bennetto closed out a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 4, dominating the second-set tiebreaker 7-1 and giving Princeton its third win. Then, less than five minutes later, Sung finished her 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2, and it was the fourth and deciding point for the Tigers. The other two matches were allowed to finish, and Rutgers won both, making the final score Princeton 4, Rutgers 3.]
The Tigers won the doubles point after the 47th-ranked duo of Sung and Isabella Chhiv overcame Tara Chilton and Yana Gurevich at the No. 1 position, 6-4, and Madeleine Jessup and Neha Velaga took down Jackeline Lopez and Chloe Brown at No. 3, 6-1.
In singles, Eva Elbaz earned the Tigers’ first win at No. 6 when she finished off Naomi Karki, 6-1, 6-3. Rutgers got on the board with a win at No. 3, as Yana Gurevich defeated Madeleine Jessup, and the matches at No. 1 (between Velaga and Chilton) and No. 5 (Chhiv vs. Kim) then began their third sets.
Bennetto, though, didn’t allow Nguyen to make it a third match that was headed to a deciding set as she led start to finish in the tiebreaker. Sung was up 5-1 when Bennetto’s match ended, and, after dropping one game, closed it out.
The Tigers now take on No. 15 Duke (3-0) at 3 p.m. ET in Durham, North Carolina, on Jan. 27.
