Survey says Americans get comfort from TV shows, streaming. What shows are most popular?


Do you and all your friends have a comfort show?

Do you watch “The Sopranos” after a hard day of work?

Does “King of Queens” cheer you up when you’re feeling down?

If so, you’re not alone.

OK, maybe you’re one of the few cheered up by watching Tony Soprano whack a guy, but you’re not alone when it comes to having comfort shows.

According to a survey by cabletv.com, 87 percent have a comfort show.

Of those, 80 percent say they feel connected to the people who have the same comfort show as them, and 71 percent want a partner they share one with.

And two out of every three people say they have a character in the show that they’re emotionally attached to.

All good reasons.

But when it comes to comfort shows, what are the best?

According to the survey, the top three comfort shows in order are “Friends,” “The Office,” and “Star Trek.” I guess Monday Night Raw isn’t considered a comfort show?

Respondents said the top genre for comfort shows are comedy, drama and sci-fi/fantasy.

How do you watch?

You can tell it’s 2023 because the way most people consume their comfort television shows are through streaming.

According to the survey, 45 percent of Americans sign up for services that offer comfort shows, and 35 percent of viewers look for those when streaming. 

The three most popular streaming services for comfort shows are Netflix (39 percent), Hulu (18 percent) and Amazon Prime (11 percent). 

If you want to stream my favorites, “The Sopranos” are on Max, while “King of Queens” is available on Peacock. It’s also on virtually all hours of the day it seems on CMT, TV Land and FYI, which air 10 hours of the show every Friday and Saturday.

What is NJ’s favorite streaming service?

In this area, one streaming service is king. According to cabletv.com, Netflix is our go-to streaming service. And we’re not alone. Netflix is also the most popular service in Pennsylvania and Delaware, as well as Connecticut.

Overall, Hulu was the top streaming service, ranking No. 1 in 20 states and tied for first in four other states. Netflix, which is No. 1 in 16 states, comes in at No. 2 overall.
