The Susanville Symphony is progressing with its plan to convert the historic Sierra Theatre into the Susanville Performing Arts Center (SPAC).

The City of Susanville has allocated up to $30,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to hire an external consultant, who will conduct a viability study and develop a business plan for the project. This funding decision was made after the city’s ad hoc committee, formed in August, recognized the need for professional guidance in creating a feasible plan for the performing arts center.

The decision to allocate these funds follows the Susanville Elks Lodge’s choice to rescind its ARPA funding. Originally granted $100,000 to repair its building, the lodge declined the funds, citing plans to sell the property and calling the acceptance of the money “disingenuous.”

During the symphony’s September concert, Ray White, president of the symphony, provided an update, noting the formation of the SPAC committee, which will represent the interests of various local performing arts groups and encourage collaboration as the project moves forward.

Once the consultant’s findings are ready, the city’s ad hoc committee will present them to the City Council for review. A vote will then determine whether the city will proceed with further funding for the performing arts center.

The S-PAC project is being closely monitored by the community as it could significantly impact the local arts scene. Additional updates are anticipated as planning progresses. The symphony encourages local support as the vision for the SPAC continues to unfold.
