Suspect in Eastpointe car theft arrested after police chase

A man who led Eastpointe police officers on a car chase early Thursday before crashing in Detroit has been arrested, officials said.

Officers were called around 5:11 a.m. about a vehicle being stolen from the area of Rosalind and Nine Mile. The vehicle reported stolen was a white 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

An officer on patrol saw the Jeep traveling south on Kelly Road and tried to conduct a traffic stop, according to authorities.

The driver refused to stop and fled with the officer giving chase, police said. Additional officers joined the pursuit, which ended when the Jeep crashed into a shed in the 12000 block of Christy Street near Gunston and Gratiot.

Investigators said the suspect exited the vehicle and ran. Officers caught him a short time later.

After searching him, police found a handgun. They also found a second gun at the scene of the crash.

Detectives are working with the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office to determine appropriate charges, officials said.

The suspect is expected to be charged Friday through 38th District Court in Eastpointe.
