Suspect in LA Tech stabbing ordered to mental health facility for evaluation

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – In a pre-trial hearing on Tuesday (May 21), the Third Judicial District Court in Lincoln Parish ordered Jacoby Johnson, a former Louisiana Tech student accused of stabbing four women outside the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center on Nov. 13, 2023, to be admitted to the Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, Louisiana.

This decision follows recent psychological assessments indicating that Johnson may not currently possess the mental competency to stand trial.

Initially, during a sanity hearing earlier this year, District Court Judge Chet Traylor ruled Johnson competent to stand trial. However, despite this ruling, doctors recommended further evaluation. Recent psychological reviews prompted the Second Circuit Court of Appeal to overturn the initial competency ruling.

As a result, Johnson will remain at the mental health facility in Jackson until professionals determine whether he is fit to stand trial or if he is deemed incompetent.

Another sanity review for Johnson has been scheduled for July 16. The court will reassess his mental condition at that time to determine the next steps in the judicial process.

Johnson faces three counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder charges.
