On the SmartLess podcast, Taika Waititi recently revealed his unexpected route into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
While he directed two blockbuster smashes, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, he admitted that he had no intention of joining the superhero series at first.
He admitted that severe financial circumstances at home played a significant factor in his choice to accept Ragnarok, describing it as an opportunity to solely care for family.
“And Thor, let’s face it — it was probably the least popular franchise,” Waititi discussed his disconnection from the titular character, saying, “I never read Thor comics as a kid. That was the comic I’d pick up and be like ‘Ugh.’ And then I did some research on it, and I read one Thor comic or 18 pages, or however long they are. I was still baffled by this character.”
The Oscar-winning filmmaker also stated that fans will not see him work on another sequel for the specific superhero because he is already scheduled for the next six years, so it’s fine if their team decides to contact someone else.
He has, however, stated that the entire crew had “too much fun” making the films, which is why they are so full of silly humor.
Regardless, both of his works were critically lauded and grossed over $700 million.
