Tastemaker Fashion: Diwali, Part I

Fashion choices at the Indian Temple of Guam’s Diwali Festival, or Festival of Lights, last Saturday were absolutely stunning! It was amazing to see many island residents dressed up in colorful traditional Indian clothing or vibrant outfits inspired by the occasion.

The Indian Temple of Guam hosted their Diwali celebration at the Hyatt Regency Guam which featured a sumptuous buffet of Indian dishes and cultural performers.

“It’s clear that this event was more than just a celebration; it was a significant and unifying moment for our diverse community on Guam. This year’s Diwali Ball not only met but exceeded our expectations, showcasing the power of cultural unity and joy,” said R. Bobby Sachdej, Indian Temple of Guam, board member.

Indians all over the world gather to celebrate Diwali annually. The festival marks the beginning of the New Year according to the Hindu Lunar Calendar.

“Diwali, the Festival of Lights, symbolizes hope and renewal. Celebrating it on Guam brought together people from all walks of life, not just the Indian community. It was a vivid reminder that despite our diverse backgrounds, we all cherish the values of togetherness, joy, and cultural appreciation,” added Sachdej.

For me, the Diwali festival blended culture and fashion to create unforgettable visual spectacles and it was an honor to witness it! This is Part I of my two-part feature. Look for Part II in next Sunday’s Pacific Daily News.
