Taylor Swift has addressed the long-standing rumors that she secretly dated several of her close female friends, putting them to rest once and for all. In the prologue for her “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” album, she explains the reason behind her decision to strictly hang out with women.
Swift reveals that she made this choice after realizing that she couldn’t casually date or even platonically hang out with men without people assuming they were sleeping together. She writes: “And so I swore off hanging out with guys. Dating, flirting, or anything that could be weaponized against me by a culture that claimed to believe in liberating women but consistently treated me with the harsh moral codes of the Victorian era.”
Swift, known for her optimistic outlook, believed that by changing her behavior and solely hanging out with female friends, she could alter the narrative. However, she soon discovered that people could still sensationalize and sexualize her friendships. She shares: “If I only hung out with my female friends, people couldn’t sensationalize or sexualize that right? I would learn later on that people could and people would.”
This isn’t the first time Swift has addressed baseless rumors about her sexuality. In a 2019 interview with Vogue, she denied that her song “Me!” was an announcement of her being part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
She clarified that her intention was to create uplifting art during a time of political turmoil. Swift acknowledged her role as an ally but emphasized that she is not a part of the LGBTQ+ community itself.
Swift and Agron were never a couple
Despite rumors linking Swift to her close friend Dianna Agron, known for her role in “Glee,” both women have consistently denied any romantic involvement. Agron dismissed speculation that she was the inspiration behind Swift’s song “22,” stating: “That’s more because of a friendship than being the inspiration for the song.” She added, “There have been many stories about my dating life that are so wildly untrue.”
It is important to note that both Swift and Agron have been strong advocates for the LGBTQIA+ community. However, they have never publicly been in queer relationships themselves. Swift is currently dating NFL star Travis Kelce, and their relationship appears to be going well.
