Taylor Swift’s South American leg of her Eras Tour resumed after the singer rescheduled her Saturday gig due to “extreme temperatures.”
As she returned to Estadio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Cruel Summer singer, 33, paid a heartfelt homage to her fan, who died ahead of her Friday gig.
As the show’s second surprise performance, the pop artist performed Bigger Than the Whole Sky, a sad song about immeasurable pain and heartache.
The Grammy winner may be seen choked up and crying as she delivers the lyrics:
“Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye / You were bigger than the whole sky / You were more than just a short time/ I’m never gonna meet / What could’ve been, would’ve been / What should’ve been you / What could’ve been, would’ve been you.”
Swift revealed on her Instagram Story that she is canceling her Saturday event due to the heartbreaking death of a fan.
“I’m writing this from my dressing room in the stadium. The decision has been made to postpone tonight’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio.”
She went on to say, “The safety and well being of my fans, fellow performers and crew has to and will always come first.”
The organizers eventually confirmed that Saturday’s show will be held on Monday instead.
The event was canceled when the Lover musician acknowledged that a fan died before the show on Friday. The fan was identified as 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado by the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, who died after feeling ill at the event.
Benevides died after being taken to the nearby Salgado Filho Hospital while first responders were treating her.
Swift rushed to her Instagram Story before the news broke to express her anguish for the passing of a young Swiftie.
“I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil,” Swift said in a lengthy message.
