Taylor Swift surpasses The Beatles to top the UK album chart.
The Beatles’ dreams of erasing a historic glitch in their chart record have been shattered by the popstar.
Last week, the Fab Four released their greatest hits albums, Red and Blue, in an attempt to have one of their albums top the UK album chart.
Swift proved she wasn’t ready to let go of her pop masterpiece 1989 (Taylor’s Version) by keeping it at the top for a third week.
The Beatles were in a similar situation when the Red and Blue albums were first released in 1973. David Bowie’s Young Americans took the number one slot at the time.
This week, the two records land exactly where they did fifty years ago on the charts.
The Beatles 1962-1966 Red Album is ranked third, and The Beatles 1967-1970 Blue Album is ranked second.
However, with fifteen UK number one albums altogether, The Beatles remain the most successful group of all time.
The original Red and Blue compilations were considered “eight of the most-perfect album sides ever devised” by Rolling Stone.
Remastered versions of their greatest songs are featured, as well as Now And Then, a “new” song based on a demo recorded by John Lennon in the 1970s.
Twenty new songs have been added to the CDs, including Twist and Shout, Taxman, Dear Prudence, and Blackbird.
