You know what I’ve been thinking? When KIPP boys basketball coach Moody Bey calls it “the craziest game I’ve ever been a part of as a player or coach,” you know it’s a good one.
In Monday’s 85-81 win against Bishop Fenwick – on enemy hardwood, no less – KIPP trailed by 16 with 2:40 remaining in regulation.
But it never quit.
“We are in the huddle for a timeout,” Bey said. “The energy from the kids was awesome. Everybody was engaged and attentive, no one was nervous, and we all knew we were going to find a way to win.”
And they did. KIPP cut Fenwick’s lead to four points with 1:30 remaining and took a three-point lead by the 30-second mark.
Trosky Peña led the Panthers with 25 points, six assists, and six steals. He was followed by Sylvester Ogbemudia (10 points, 10 rebounds), Tolu Abosede (19 points, 5 steals), Ryan Damian (10 points), and – last but not least – Caleb Bior with all 10 of his points coming in the fourth quarter.
“Don’t hope,” said Bey after the win. “Don’t hope the ball falls in your lap – go get it; don’t hope your shot goes in – go finish strong; don’t hope you win the game – go take the win.”
The week gets better. KIPP also defeated Greater Lowell Tech, 60-59, on the road. Peña led the charge with 22 points.
