Teamwork Propels Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and SZA to the Top of the UK Music Charts

Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and SZA finished at the top of the UK Music Chart in 2023.

The year 2023 was a watershed moment for women in the UK music business.

According to an assessment of Official Charts data undertaken by BPI, the trade association for the British recorded music industry, female musicians have enjoyed the most weeks at No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart in a calendar year since the countdown began in 1952.

Women topped the list for the longest time since the countdown’s beginning in 2023, courtesy to Miley Cyrus’ 10-week smash song Flowers, which became the year’s biggest success with 198 million streams. Hits from fellow American stars SZA (Kill Bill) and Taylor Swift (Anti-Hero) are included.

Four of 2023’s five biggest hits and seven of the year’s Top 10 were all female-led, including Cameroonian-American singer Libianca (People), Ellie Goulding of the United Kingdom (Miracle with Calvin Harris), PinkPantheress (Boy’s A Liar), and RAYE (Escapism ft 070 Shake).

Furthermore, women appeared as solo artists or in groups with other musicians on 48.5% of the songs that made it to the Top 10 of the weekly Official Singles Chart in 2023.
