Teenage boy arrested for alleged car theft attempts

A 13-year-old boy is under arrest for allegedly trying to break into cars in Wilmington early Saturday morning.

A nearby resident called them around 2:40 a.m. to report 2 would-be car thieves trying to get into a Kia in the 300 block of River Road in Wilmington, New Castle County Police said.

Soon after that, an officer saw them trying to break into a second Kia near South Cannon Drive.

Some Kia’s and Hyundai’s are said to be easier to steal than other cars because they lack an engine immobilizer, which doesn’t allow a car to start when someone uses a key or fob that doesn’t match that car.

A Milwaukee-based group calling itself the Kia Boyz posted a video on TikTok last year showing how easy it was to steal 2011 to 2021 Kia’s and Hyundai’s that weren’t equipped with immobilizers.

The suspects in this incident ran, and the cop was able to catch the 13-year-old, who’s a Wilmington resident.

The teen was charged with attempted vehicle theft, criminal mischief, conspiracy and resisting arrest.

The second suspect is still at large, and police are asking anyone who lives in the area where the attempted car thefts took place, and who has information or surveillance video related to them, to notify authorities.
