Teens seriously injured after driving stolen car wrong-way on Central Coast highway


A group of teenagers have serious injuries after stealing a car in South Monterey County Tuesday night and crashing it on Highway 101.According to Greenfield police, the teens stole the car, a black Kia Soul, on Oak Avenue, between 10th and 11th streets. They say despite extensive search efforts, the vehicle was unable to be found right away. Later in the evening, police say the stolen Kia was spotted on the peninsula, then in Salinas. At some point after that, the teens drove the car the wrong way on Highway 101, leading to a head-on crash.All parties involved suffered serious injuries, some of which are life-threatening. The Greenfield Police Department posted the following statement on their Facebook page: “To our younger community members: While California laws might seem lenient on delinquent behavior, the rules of physics do not discriminate by age. We urge you to think twice before committing a crime. Consider the potential consequences, and do not give in to peer pressure — we believe in your ability to make the right choices.”Police also added in the post, “We would like to stress the importance of not leaving your vehicles unattended and running.” It’s unclear if that’s how the teens were able to steal the car. Greenfield schools have been informed about the crash and are prepared to offer emotional support to students as needed.
