Daytime medical drama Doctors, which has been running for 23 years, will end next year.
The BBC blamed “super-inflation in drama production”. It said costs had “increased significantly” at the Birmingham site, where the show is filmed, and it had decided instead to finance new shows in the West Midlands.
The soap follows the lives of the staff and patients at a Midlands GP practice in the fictional town of Letherbridge, and has featured appearances from many actors who have since gone on to become household names, such as Eddie Redmayne and Sheridan Smith. The final episode will be aired in December 2024.
