Tennis, Australian Open 2024 men’s final preview: Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev chase title – schedule, how to watch live

A new Australian Open tennis champion will be crowned Sunday night (28 January) in Melbourne.

World No.4 Jannik Sinner will meet third seed Daniil Medvedev, with neither man ever having hoisted the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.

Sinner, just 22, was playing in just his second major semi-final when he took out 10-time AO champion Novak Djokovic on Friday (26 January), marking the first time the world No.1 had lost a match at Melbourne Park since 2018 (33 consecutive wins).

Djokovic, in fact, had never lost a semi or a final on Rod Laver Arena: He was 20-0 in those rounds prior to his ouster, Sinner prevailing 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3 after being denied a match point in the third set.

Sinner has dropped just that one set in his run to the final across six matches. In November, he helped the Italian men’s squad capture its first Davis Cup team title in 47 years, beating Djokovic along the way.

Medvedev, 27, is into his sixth career major final and third in Australia (2021 and 2022) after a back-from-the-brink five-set triumph over reigning Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3.

He’s in search of just a second tennis Grand Slam, however, going just 1-4 in those finals. He captured the 2021 US Open title over Djokovic in the final.

Medvedev leads his head-to-head 6-3 with Sinner, but he’s lost the last three meetings – all coming in the latter half of 2023. Sunday’s final will mark their first meeting at a major.
