TENNIS FINALS ROUNDUP: Cranbrook wins seventh D3 title in nine seasons, edging DCDS; Groves, Seaholm post top-five finishes in D2


Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood earned individual state titles in six of the eight flights at the Division 3 finals in Kalamazoo over the weekend, regaining its state championship after finishing runner-up a year ago, while Detroit Country Day was second, 11 points back.

The Cranes have now won seven D3 state titles in nine seasons, and nine total titles since the season switch in 2007.

Country Day’s Saahitth Reddy beat Cranbrook’s Ryan Michaels, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, to win the No. 1 singles title, while the Cranes’ Caden Che beat DCDS’ Dan Marin, 6-4, 6-4, to win the No. 2 singles title.

Cranbrook’s Jace Bernard beat East Grand Rapids’ Mikey Beusse, 6-3, 6-4, to win the No. 3 singles title, while Amaan Khan beat St. Joseph’s Eeshaan Ale, 6-2, 6-1, to defend his title at No. 4 singles.

The Cranes’ Cole Kirschenbaum and Kenneth Hu beat East Grand Rapids’ Charlie Lentz and Luke Lentz, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, to win the No. 2 doubles title, while teammates Ryan VanDyke and Ben Stevenson beat Country Day’s Thomas Bresson and John McKany, 6-1, 6-3, to win the title at No. 3 doubles.

Cranbrook finished off the title with Ketan Swami and Kevin Guo beating East Grand Rapids’ Joe Mulder and Tommy Rosmarin, 6-2, 6-2, for the No. 4 doubles title.

The DCDS duo of Achy Reddy and Charlie Khaghany beat Cranbrook’s Andrew Fink and Aryan Tiwari, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, in the semifinals at No. 1 doubles, before falling 6-3, 6-3 to fifth-seeded Devin Kozal and Jace Konwinski in the title match.

Division 2

Top-five finishes for Seaholm and Groves in D2

Birmingham Seaholm finished as Division 2 runner-up in MHSAA state finals in Grand Rapids over the weekend, as Midland Dow continued its domination of the division, repeating as state champions by a five-point margin.

Dow finished with 29 team points, Seaholm had 24, while Birmingham Groves was fifth (18), South Lyon East finished in a tie for ninth (11) and North Farmington tied for 11th (10). Lakeland picked up four points to finish in a tie for 15th, while Walled Lake Central scored three, tying for 18th.

Groves’ Benji Cook and Nathan Lucken beat Seaholm’s Mohan Badhwar and Sammy Abdo, 6-3, 6-3 to win the state title at No. 3 doubles, while Seaholm’s fourth-seeded duo of Loe Kim and Finlay Sparby beat Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central’s Austin Rowland and Owen Godley, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4), to win the flight title at No. 4 doubles.

Seaholm’s Carson Wright and Sean Joyce lost 6-3, 6-3 in the flight finals at No. 2 doubles, to Alex Chen and Willem Knoester of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central.

South Lyon East’s Cameron Crosby and Mason Crosby lost in the semifinals at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, while Seaholm’s Joaquim Flory reached the semis at No. 4 singles.

Groves’ Spencer Goldberg and Jake Rosenwasser reached the semis at No. 1 doubles, while teammates Michael Dolan and Lucas Winchester were semifinalists at No. 2 doubles.

Division 4

Top 10 finishes in D4 for Frankel and Notre Dame Prep

West Bloomfield Frankel Jewish Academy amassed 12 points to finish seventh in the Division 4 state finals in the Holland area over the weekend, while Pontiac Notre Dame Prep notched nine points to finish in a ninth-place tie with Kalamazoo Christian.

Clawson finished tied for 16th, with three points.

Ann Arbor Greenhills won the title with 39 points, after dropping down from D3, where it won the 2022 title, while last year’s D4 champion, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, was second with 22.

Clawson’s MacKinley McNalley lost in the semifinals at No. 1 singles, while Frankel’s Tony Carson was a semifinalist at No. 3 singles, and teammate Harry Shaevsky was a semifinalist at No. 4 singles.

Frankel’s Robbie Feldman and Brandon Witt made the semifinals at No. 2 doubles, as well.
