Over the past few years, the San Benito tennis program has quietly been growing into one of the premier programs in the Valley. From continued success on the courts to growing participation, Greyhound tennis has been on the rise for several years. Hoping to continue that growth, the San Benito Tennis Booster Club arranged for a rare experience this past weekend that is sure to bring even more interest to the growing sport.
Last weekend, the varsity tennis team was able to participate in the San Antonio International Team Tennis Championships. One of only 13 high school squads in attendance, the young Greyhound athletes were able to take in performances from some of the best tennis players in the world, including Venus Williams, JJ Wolf, Mary Stoiana, Gael Monfils, and the teams from Baylor and UTSA. Players also attended seminars from professional players and coaches while at the event.
The memorable trip was made possible by the newly formed booster club, which was able to raise hundreds of dollars with a last second fund raising effort. The group of devoted parents managed to raise enough money to send 11 student athletes the prestigious international tournament.
“A lot of us parents felt the tennis team was kind of getting overlooked and forgotten so we came together and went in full force to provide an experience for these kids who train so hard all year long,” said Greyhound Tennis Booster Club President Beverley Ortiz. “This is only the second trip the tennis team has ever taken and the other time was last year for a tournament in Laredo.”
