While red blushes aren’t exactly new, they’re taking over 2024 with serious force. Red blush became the year’s biggest beauty trend when RMS Beauty founder and makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift rocked a stunning red blush. Once a key makeup artist for Victoria’s Secret, she told us that it wasn’t pink hues behind the natural-looking flush but reds. From there, the internet dove into the deep end. And so did we!

Just like pink and peach blushes, reds come in many different shades. From bright apple red to deep red wine, red blush has different moods and seasons. Apple and cherry colors dominated this summer, for example. But now, with the weather (finally) turning cooler, darker reds are rising in popularity. And with fall upon us, it’s the perfect time to break out the red wine lip and cheek combo.

Fall for Darker Shades

Red wine shades are all about the rich, dark shades of red. And that makes them perfect for fall! These will often fall into the “berry” category, though you’ll want to look for a shade with tempered purple tones. The goal is to get the dark red look of merlot and a deep, captivating flush on the lips and the cheeks.

Miami makeup artist Natalie Dresher notes that medium and deeper skin tones look incredible in deep berry shades of red. “Patrick Ta She’s Wanted Blush Duo ($38) plus Fenty Gloss Bomb ($21) in Fuschia Flex is my go-to combo,” Dresher says. “This deep berry blush is amazing on the cheeks. I love using the cream counterpart to dab on the center of my lips. Gloss over with the Fenty Gloss Bomb and it’s the perfect pairing.”

But if you have fairer skin and still want in on the red wine lip and cheek combo, Dresher suggests opting for pinker shades in blush and letting your lip look carry the deeper red shade. Together, they still communicate a dark, moody look.

“DIBS GlowTour Duo in Retrograde Rose ($38) plus Stila Liquid Lipstick in Sirena ($24) makes an amazing pairing for the more fair-complexioned girls who want to rock a wine-colored duo,” she explains. “The subtle shimmer in the Dibs Glowtour resembles the bubbles in your favorite sparkling wine, and the Sirena shade in the Stila liquid lipstick is a brighter wine color allowing for an easier wear.”
