The Detroit Auto Show is returning to its old time slot, which will result in it competing with CES

After two lackluster years, the North American International Auto Show is being cancelled for 2024. However, it’s not the end of an era as the event will return in January of 2025.
The move returns the show to its old time slot, which is a significant change as the last two events have been held in September. In a statement obtained by The Detroit News, the executive director of the Detroit Auto Show said “After discussions with numerous partners, we believe a January date absolutely makes the most sense.”
Rod Alberts added, “In a constantly changing global automotive landscape, this update reflects our efforts to continue to reimagine the Detroit Auto Show with keeping an eye on what matters most – getting people excited about cars.” The Charity Preview is slated to occur on January 10, while the main show will run from January 11-20. We can also expect a media day earlier in the month.

The Detroit Auto Show has been a shell of its former self ever since the event returned after the coronavirus pandemic. The 2022 show was particularly bad as a number of automakers skipped the event and this resulted in a barren show floor that was largely devoid of new debuts.
The 2023 event was a marked improvement as dealers helped to fill the gaps left by automakers who decided not to attend. There were also a handful of notable debuts including the Ford F-150 and GMC Acadia as well as the facelifted Cadillac CT5 and Jeep Gladiator.
We’ll have to see what the future holds, but organizers have stuck the Detroit Auto Show back between a rock and a hard place. Besides having to deal with the Los Angeles Auto Show in November of 2024 and the Chicago Auto Show in February of 2025, the Detroit Auto Show will compete directly with CES 2025, which runs from January 7-10.
