The Director of ‘Suicide Squad’ Confesses That the Joker Forehead Tattoo Was a Bad Idea

David Ayer is admitting to a mistake he made years ago.

The director of the 2016 movie Suicide Squad said he regretted giving Jared Leto’s Joker an obvious tattoo on his forehead.

In the DC Comics movie, Leto played an anti-hero whose forehead had the word “damaged” written across it.

At the time the movie came out, Ayer supported the choice, saying that his version of the Joker was “original” and that the tattoo was a part of the comic book canon.

Most recently, the director shared a picture on X, which used to be Twitter, of Joker without any tattoos and surrounded by a cloud of purple skulls with the words “Original intent.”

When one of the users asked who had the idea to tattoo Joker, Ayer said, “I own the tattoo idea 100 per cent. It was my choice.”

He went on to say that he had wanted the tattoo to say “blessed” instead of “damaged,” but that he now regrets his choice.

“Now having said that – I regret that decision. It created acrimony and division. Not every idea is a good idea. And I’ll just be in the corner here while the internet slaps me around for this post,” Ayer said.

Even though it had a great cast, the 2016 movie was criticized by both reviewers and audiences.

In 2021, James Gunn, who is now the CEO of DC, remade the movie. It got good reviews and a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes grade.
