From choosing products that support the skin’s barrier to tools that soothe irritation, founder of Seoulista Beauty Una McGurk shares her expert tips
What is sensitive skin?
Sensitive skin is typically characterised as skin that is not able to tolerate harsh conditions, chemicals or environments, usually occurring when the skin’s natural barrier is weakened. It’s not always clear what the causes are and, as a result, how to properly care for it.
Is sensitive skin something you’re born with or can it happen to anyone?
There are many triggers, both natural and environmental, that it’s hard to put a finger on the cause. Naturally sensitive skin is genetic and is likely caused by a pre-existing inflammatory skin condition, whereas environmentally sensitive skin is quite literally impacted by the surrounding environment, be it becoming reactive to product application or exposure to environmental stressors, such as UV rays, pollution, blue light and sweat, or even what you eat.
Top tips for sensitive skin care
Look for products that maintain and nourish your skin barrier. Hyaluronic acid, shea butter and panthenol are humectants and emollients that draw and seal in moisture. Ceramides will help to replenish your skin barrier function.
Seoulista Beauty’s latest launch, Seoulista Instant Wonder 4-In-1 Day Cream, is packed with this whole roster of skin-caring ingredients, including BAR1 complex, which has been designed to help strengthen the skin barrier.
If you’re looking for more of a treatment addition to your routine, powered by Cryo Cooling Technology, Seoulista Wonderberry Skin Defence Instant Facial is infused with hydrating hyaluronic acid, antioxidant blueberry and skin-caring ceramides. The naturally cooling transfer system, made with game-changing biocellulose, fits the facial contours like a second skin. Cooling the skin, it soothes, depuffs and promotes blood and nutrient circulation to drive the protecting serum deeper into the skin.
Not always the most considered part of your skincare routine, another potential sensitivity trigger is cleansing. Avoid chemicals altogether with Seoulista Magic Cleanse. This double-sided, reusable cleansing tool delivers twice the cleansing action, with one side for gentle exfoliation and the other for a naturally antibacterial cleanse — all by just adding water.
Can I still try new products?
Sensitive skin doesn’t mean you have to avoid new products altogether, but it does mean taking a little more care before applying to the entire face. Test on a small patch of skin and leave to see if any reaction occurs before full application.
We recommend the Seoulista Calming Super Serum, which is a gentle, lightweight serum that helps to heal, soothe, reduce redness and strengthen the skin barrier, leaving stressed-out skin feeling soothed and refreshed.
It’s designed to be used in tandem with the Seoulista Cryo Cool, which is an innovative device that cools the skin to help soothe irritation, lift and firm the complexion and reduce puffiness. The thick aluminium cooling plates remain icy cool, even if stored at room temperature, so you can use it immediately without the need to refrigerate.
Used together, the cold therapy helps to stimulate the skin, to allow the serums to penetrate the skins surface more easily.
Top takeaways
Only you know your skin best and the triggers you’ve experienced to date, so not all advice is good advice.
1. Identify if your skin is naturally or environmentally sensitive, as it’s likely the treatment will be different depending on which category your skin falls into.
2. Stop using a product immediately if you start to feel a flare-up and/or reaction.
3. Try to use products that help to support a healthy skin barrier, as a healthy skin barrier helps to protect the skin from environmental aggressors.
4. Use supporting tools that are designed to help calm redness, soothe irritation and reduce inflammation.
